Document number CIA-RDP79T00826A002900400001-0 declassified and released through the CIA's CREST database. Previously available only on four computers located outside of Washington D.C., the Agency was successfully pressured into putting the files online as a result of a MuckRock lawsuit and the efforts of Emma Best. The metadata was collected by Data.World, and the files are now being archived and made text searchable by the Internet Archive.

Intermittency measurements have been performed within the first one hundred virtual diameters of an axi-symmetric compressible wake. The primary measurements, performed with the hot-wire anemometer, concerned the intermittency factor and the frequency of zero occurrences. The intermittent flow covered most of the wake profile but for a narrow region about the axis, and was found to be normally distributed around the average front position. The latter, along with the extent of the front standard...

This report explores the use of HF backscatter radar in conjunction with an artificial ionosphere obtained by forming an electron cloud at E layer altitudes. An ocean surveillance experiment is suggested aimed at obtaining over-the-horizon HF radar coverage of ships a few hundred miles from the radar site.

Microscopic examination of animal remains from 'birdstrikes' showed that bats account for at least some of the 'birdstrikes' reported at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. The distribution of the Mexican Free-tailed bat during the night at ground level seems to be constant in all locations tested in and near the base; concentrations of a second species of bats, probably Myotis velifer occur around strong lights which attract insects. Mexican Free-tailed bats emerging from the Bracken Cave near the...

Tables of the electromagnetic scattering amplitude and cross section of a conducting hemisphere for nose-on incidence are presented as a function of frequency, bistatic angle and polarization. The tables give the real and imaginary parts of the scattering amplitude and the radar cross section normalized to pi R sq (R = hemisphere radius). Results are shown for kR (k = 2 pi/wavelength) from 0.2 to 20.0 in steps of 0.2, for bistatic angles from 0 degrees to 150 degrees in steps of 30 degrees and...

Measurements are described of Rayleigh scattering from atoms and molecules in the gaseous state at one atmosphere. The use of a Q-switched ruby laser of 8 MW average power and care in minimizing spurious light permitted the determination of very small depolarizations. In agreement with theoretical predictions, the depolarization ratio (for linearly polarized light) or argon was found to be vanishingly small. Similarly, for helium. However, xenon and methane exhibited nonzero depolarization...

Previous work on the interrelations of the flammability properties of n-alkanes in air have been extended to both vapor and liquid fuel mixtures. Based on the application of Raoult's and Dalton's laws governing vapor pressure and composition above a solution of two or more liquid hydrocarbons to Le Chatelier's rule governing the flammability limits of vapor mixtures, equations have been derived which make it possible to predict overall flammability properties of mixtures from the properties and...

Thomson scatter (incoherent backscatter) observations of the ionosphere were made at Millstone Hill at a wavelength of 68 cm during 1964, for 30-hour periods every two weeks. These data have been employed to derive the mean hourly F-region (200 to 700 km) electron density profile and electron and ion temperature curves in each month. The results are presented in this report, together with the derived seasonal variation of electron density (at 0600, 1200, 1800 and 2400 hours local time) and the...

In some situations encountered today the components are so reliable that no failures are observed within the time available for testing. This can pose a problem in data analysis and interpretation. Consideration is given to the problem of determining lower confidence bounds on the reliability of a complex system, such as the Saturn 1-C, when each component is assumed to have an exponential life and different components have different multiplicities within the system. We discuss and compare the...

During incubation of a mixture of phage lambda and acridine orange in a solution of low ionic force at a pH of 7.6, dark inactivation of the phage takes place. A phage mutant was isolated and described; it is resistant to acridine orange both within and outside the cell. Acquisition of resistance to the dye cannot be the result of impermeability of the mutant's protein membrane for dye molecules. No differences were detected between the absorption spectra and melting curves of nucleic acids in...

Several 3- to 5-year-old children participated in this study designed to discover the necessary procedures to establish nonresponding in preschool children during delay of reinforcement. The children were divided into two groups: (1) the programed group (PG), to which a 60-second delay period was introduced gradually and (2) the baseline group (BG), to which the 60-second delay was introduced abruptly. They were told to push a button, which sometimes resulted in the child's receiving poker...
